Janelle specializes in treating those with mood disorders, relationship conflict, and supporting families with special needs.
I am a Marriage and Family Therapist who works with adolescents and adults, focusing on life-stage transitions, mood disorders, relationship conflict, and families with special needs. I earned my Masters of Science in Marriage & Family Therapy at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. Before graduate school, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I majored in Human Development & Family Studies. Having a strong interest in helping the special education community, I worked as an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapist during and after college, where I supported children with autism and their families. I moved to Chicago the summer after I graduated, where I continued to work as an ABA Therapist. I wanted to expand my knowledge of other disabilities, so I found a job working in the Special Education Transition Program at New Trier High School. In this role, I supported students with a wide range of disabilities, between the ages of 18-22, to prepare them for post-school life. I worked in this role for almost three years, and it led me to the decision to become a Marriage & Family Therapist. I noticed that these families typically need extra support and cannot always get it through family, friends, and outside systems, such as school. Through this experience, I’ve become especially passionate about and specialized in working with individuals with disabilities and their families.
At The Bette D. Harris Clinic at The Family Institute, I worked with individuals, couples and families with various obstacles and of all backgrounds. I use the tenets of Integrated Systemic Therapy (IST), which is a framework that implements various models to fit each client’s unique needs. I work collaboratively with clients and use a strengths-based approach to help each person accomplish their goals. I am qualified to work with any system and have found a strong desire to work relationally with teens, young adults, families, and couples.
Outside of the therapy room, I enjoy listening to music, spending time with friends, watching loads of HGTV, and cuddling with my cat, Raisin. Exercise is my main form of self-care, and I teach a barre class a few times a week.
