Cara Thies, MS, LMFT, specializes in treating anxiety, depression, and relationship issues.

Profoundly passionate in working with members of the LGBTQIA+ and GNC community.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from DePaul University with a degree in Psychology, Cara earned her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from The Family Institute at Northwestern University. Cara completed her clinical training at the Bette D. Harris Family and Child Clinic, where she worked with children, families, couples, and individuals. Cara has since provided therapy in correctional facilities, as well as inpatient and day treatment settings.

Cara has experience in facilitating therapy groups including groups based in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Collaborative Problem Solving, and process groups for teens and adolescents. She is highly invested in working collaboratively in therapy to help create and foster a safe and affirming space for self-exploration. Cara is profoundly passionate in working with members of the LGBTQIA+ and GNC community. Her areas of interest include gender processing and exploration, reconciling sexual orientation and religious beliefs, culturally sensitive couple and family therapy, intersectional individual, couple, and family therapy, and non-monogamy, polyamory, and other relationship structures. Cara lived in Oregon, where she primarily worked in a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Unit in a psychiatric residential facility for adolescents where she facilitated therapy groups, and provided individual and family counseling.

Cara returned to her home of Chicago, to fulfill her dream of earning her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Cara is currently a second year doctoral student, and is excited to continue learning and contributing to the field of clinical psychology.

Cara utilizes a collaborative and strength based approach in therapy, and believes that each individual holds the skills they need to live their most meaningful life. In using an integrative approach, Cara works along side her clients to help achieve their therapeutic goals.

Outside of the therapy office, Cara enjoys spending time with her animals, going to the gym, and eating Chicago style pizza.
