Learn more about our clinician, Mallory Mandarino, MS, MSW

1. What inspired you to enter this field? I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by similar professionals at a job, a therapeutic day school, when I was around 21-22. I would work alongside Master and Doctorate level clinicians and always thought, “I can’t wait to have their job” and was determined to have “that job” ever since. It was the way I saw them create relationships with others that made me realize how life changing this career would be. Watching a relationship be created from square 1 and grow from there will never get old!

2. Where has been your favorite place to travel and why? I know there are endless gems in this world but I absolutely love Boston. I first fell in love with it because I went during the fall. Pictures don’t even do the scenery justice, I was surrounded by fall foliage, which is my favorite.

4. What is your favorite thing about living in Illinois? The fact we get all 4 seasons! I love each season for so many reasons. I truly enjoy each season for what it is and yes, even winter! Each season means something new and I can appreciate the beauty in every season we get. The “ber” months are my favorite, September-December

5. What are some tools you use to decompress? You can catch me at CorePower Yoga when I’m looking to decompress. It was one of the first things I took up on when I moved to the city and I’ve been hooked ever since. Even after I’ve had a long day, I always look forward to my classes at CorePower, I feel calm and strong both mentally and physically afterwards.

6. Do you have any mentors? Who inspires you and why? I was inspired by a clinical psychologist I once worked with. She was beyond knowledgeable, professional, and also personable. I always looked up to her as a clinician and loved her work ethic. She was definitely a driving factor for me going into this field and I am so thankful for that because I absolutely love what I do.

7. How would you recommend a client prepare for a session? I would recommend for clients to “not prepare”. Let me explain why! We want to see you for who you are at this time in your life, good or bad. We are here to work WITH you! However, if I can give any preparation tips, it would be to allow yourself to open up even though it might not feel natural, prepare to feel uncomfortable at times. It’s okay to try new things that feel “weird”. Sometimes that feeling is just what we need. The best part is, we promise to always support you during your journey. Just show up, be you, and we will work on things together.

8. What are you most looking forward to now that it’s summer? Endless walks by the lake! Mindless walking with either myself or a friend next to the lake brings me such peace. I also play beach volleyball every week which is something I truly look forward to.
