Learn more about our clinical intern, Lupe Rodriguez!

1. What inspired you to enter this field? My inspiration to enter this field came from a transformative experience within my own family. A close relative struggled with their mental health for as long as I can remember, and it really impacted every aspect of their life.  Their turning point came when they started seeing a clinician specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Soon, they were able to conquer various phobias, re-enter the workforce, and become more present and engaged with their family.

This experience was revelatory for me, it showed me that effective clinical intervention doesn’t just change one life—it has the potential to positively impact entire families and communities. This realization spurred my decision to pursue a career in this field, with the aim of creating positive change that extends far beyond individual treatment rooms.

2. Where has been your favorite place to travel and why? Of all the destinations I’ve been lucky enough to explore, Japan is one of the most interesting and incredible. The country offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. My journey there was also an immersion into a unique way of life that deeply resonated with me. The experience intensified my passion for exploring diverse cultures, and Japan stands out as the epitome of what I find most fascinating and enriching in my travels.

4. What is your favorite thing about living in Chicago? I know I just talked about Japan, but Chicago is actually one of my favorite cities in the world!  I live for Its incredible social scene, there is always a diverse array of opportunities for connection and entertainment here. Chicago also has world-class restaurants and many local hidden gems I love to eat at. And the city’s architecture is unparalleled! It is a striking blend of historical and modern design, offering visual inspiration at every turn. The Chicago River cuts through the heart of the city, and I love walking along it.  And then there’s Lake Michigan—a vast, awe-inspiring body of water that rivals the majesty of an ocean. Chicago is the best city in the world, but I might be biased because it’s home!

5.  What are some tools you use to decompress? My first go-to when I need to decompress is meaningful conversation and a heartfelt hug from someone I love. This does wonders for my well-being. If I don’t have access to a loved one, I find other ways to relax. Whether it’s immersing myself in a comedy that guarantees laughter or listening to a song that resonates with me, I try to do things that bring me back to a higher energy level.

 6.  Do you have any mentors? Who inspires you and why? Oprah is everything to me. She has been a constant source of inspiration since my childhood. What stands out to me about Oprah is her unique blend of wisdom, compassion, and ability to overcome difficult challenges. Her ability to balance immense success with humility and grace is nothing short of awe-inspiring to me. I often find myself navigating life’s challenges by asking, ‘What would Oprah do?’

7.  How would you recommend a client prepare for a session? I would recommend that the client write down goals they have for therapy, This not only provides a structured roadmap for our sessions but also offers a tangible measure of progress. Additionally, I encourage clients to compile any questions they may have. Doing so enables open communication, and helps both us be aligned in our understanding and expectations for the therapeutic journey we are embarking on.

8.   How do you keep up to date on industry trends and news? I’m an avid consumer of industry literature and podcasts. Whether it’s delving into a new book on psychology or listening to insightful podcast episodes from seasoned therapists, I find immense joy in expanding my knowledge base. I also actively follow therapists whom I admire on social media platforms, as they often share valuable insights and the latest trends in therapy.

9.   What are you most looking forward to for fall? When it comes to fashion, fall is my time to shine— my fall wardrobe is my fashion pièce de résistance! The rich hues, cozy layers, and textured fabrics make me feel genuinely excited about dressing up. The multitude of fall events in the city provides the perfect backdrop for showcasing my personal style and is a period that I eagerly anticipate each year, both for its aesthetic potential and the vibrant social calendar it brings.
