What inspired you to enter this field?

I have wanted to be a part of this incredible field since I was about 10 years old.  I understood the power and impact of good mental health, even as a child and would often be confused as to why it wasn’t seen the same as a broken bone or physical illness.  I promised myself I would grow up and give mental health the attention it deserved.  I am lucky and proud to say that there was never a doubt in my mind that this is where I would end up, working in this field.  The passion I have for psychiatric nursing is almost indescribable.

Where has been your favorite place to travel and why?

I love going to naturally beautiful places.  It is a life goal of mine to visit all the National Parks.  Some of my absolute favorites so far have been Saguaro National Park in Arizona and White Sands National Park in New Mexico.  How such stunning places naturally exist never ceases to amaze me!

What is your favorite thing about living in Chicago?

My favorite thing about living in Chicago is the balance I feel here.  I love working downtown and feeling the energy of the city, being able to look out to Lake Michigan and feel connected to the Earth and nature and being able to drive just a couple of miles to feel that neighborhood homey feeling.  I don’t think there are too many cities where you can truly have all of that within a 5 miles radius!

What are some tools you use to decompress?

It can sometimes be a skill to decompress!  I have never had a busier time in my life than I do now, so being able to take time for myself, decompress and reflect is so important!  My top go-to “tool” is my dog!  Whether it’s taking him on a nice long walk, or cuddling up on the couch, I always feel at ease when he is with me!  I have also recently gotten into drawing, which can take me to another place in my mind for hours, leaving the stress of the real world behind.

Do you have any mentors? Who inspires you and why?

I am beyond fortunate to say I have so many mentors and inspiration in my life.  The first and most prominent being my parents.  My mom taught me the invaluable importance of communication and ability to express feelings, this has provided me with tools that I have used throughout my life and career in helping and caring for others.  My dad, a therapist himself, continues to support me every day in achieving my dreams by being my number one mentor by sharing his knowledge and wisdom of the field.

How would you recommend a client prepare for a session?

I would say, don’t put any pressure on yourself.  We are here to explore and figure out your thoughts and feelings together and over time.  You don’t have to have all the answers to our questions or communicate everything in one session.  Know that we are here for you for the long haul.  We will help you through each chapter, the short ones and long ones, failures and successes alike.  Let your story unfold without pressure.

What are you most looking forward to for summer?

I am looking forward to that Summertime Chi feeling!  Paddleboarding on the lake, bike rides, Cubs games, patio lunches, and no more heavy winter coats!
